Your keywords will be under "Other" and the number of files with each keyword will be be displayed next to it in parentheses. Global keyword searching is of greater importance to me. I'd agree it's a poor recommendation as an organiser, just a simple image browser, of which there are many.

You can have what you want with free and open source products, but I think you need to free yourself from the idea that you need to use just a single product to do so. Though many use the other approach quite successfully. I do like though how Lightzone integrates raw development with the editor, I personally prefer a more integrated workflow approach than using 3 separate products, so I would lean more to the Organizer/Lightzone approach more. I know both offer very good raw development and the differences between the two in terms of raw aren't that large. If so, then I should think the only differences in how the two develop raw would be in how their controls interact with the raw engine. I THINK both RawTherapee and Lightzone use the same DCRaw brand engine. This would enable you to use just two products, the organizer and Lightzone for raw development and editing, simplifying the workflow a bit and requiring that you only have to deal with two different user interfaces instead of three. Lightzone, a very good raw developer also has an excellent and quite advanced editor built into it.

You'll need DAM software for that.Įven though I use the commercial product ACDSee Pro 8 and now, Ultimate 8, you can replicate much, if not all, of the commercial products functionality by using Opensource, or other free, software.įor organizing, input, and managing photos, for free I like either FastStone, or XNView.įor raw development, RawTherapee is a good OpenSource developer.įor bit mapped editing, GiMP is good, though there IS a slightly different route available. Organizing photos means that there should be features to create and maintain virtual selections/collections of photos that can be stored anywhere on the hard drive. I don't know why anyone would recommend it to organize photos.

Don't expect DAM features from such software.

If I do a global search in Lightroom it brings up every image I have with that keyword, regardless of which folder it is in. I have the basic XnView, but I just downloaded this to see what it had to offer.Īll my images are keyworded and yet XnView won't let be do a global search based on keywords, it only seems to allow me to search within a folder, which is not very helpful. XNViewMP is pretty nice for organization. For organization, gThumb is quite simple and usable, however it seems there is no Windows version.
